How to look after your dentures
First of all:
A new set of dentures is a big change. Eating is a good way to check for pain and discomfort. At first put less food in your mouth. If you find that they are sore, the golden rule is; if it's sore and breaks the skin or causes an ulcer, you must return to the dental technician.
Partial dentures:
They usually take a few days to 'bed in', this is because the natural teeth move slightly and allow the denture to settle. As a rule, dentures should not be worn to bed.
Cleaning:
Use a brush on, brush off cleaner. Use a pure bristle brush, clean your dentures over a sink full of water.
Keeping of old dentures:
We recommend that you keep a previous set of dentures to use in case of emergency. Store in a coat of olive oil, after giving them a good clean and dry.
IMPORTANT: If you notice any abnormalities developing in your mouth or notice strange colouring of the mouth tissue, seek advice IMMEDIATELY.
Funny dental stories
In the dog house:
A man came in from his work's Christmas Party very drunk. He was made to sleep on the sofa by his wife.
While he slept his denture that was a poor fit dropped half out onto his lip. His dog took the denture from his mouth and proceeded to chew it up. To the dog it was an interesting smelly bone.
When the man woke up he wondered what all the sharp pieces of pink plastic were sticking into his feet.
We made this man a new set in one day, only two days before Christmas.
A jaw dropping experience:
A lorry driver was driving up the motorway with both windows open. A pigeon flew through his left side window hit him in the jaw and his teeth shot out of the right window.
The lorry driver did not know what had hit him until he looked on the floor of his cab and there lay a dead pigeon and part of his denture.
The morning blues:
A man collected a new set of dentures at 9.00am. He went to work where he had to remove a very dusty plastered ceiling.
To protect his brand new teeth he wrapped them in a clean handkerchief and put them in his jacket pocket.
At 11.30am he emerged from the building covered in dust from his dirty ceiling job. He proceeded to bang his jacket against the wall to get the dust off.
Only after beating his jacket several times did he remember his brand new teeth were in his jacket pocket. At 12.15pm the man returned his teeth in 5 or 6 pieces.
We had a good laugh about his misfortune and repaired the dentures for free.
